I've been away. Its always amazing what the garden does in the absence of its gardener! I will gradually catch up - and enjoy - my findings.
I spent today gardening. The morning in my home garden - the afternoon at my community plot. Lots of weeding. Some harvesting. Some planning. There are a few more summer sowings that need to be done. Also, just general checking on what's going on. Gardens develop their own life. Sometimes I feel I'm just the observer - doing my best to follow along.
I have a bunch of photos I took today and I'll get them posted over the next couple days. And I'm looking forward to regular gardening for a while now. Also regular harvesting and enjoying of the gifts of the earth.

Welcome back. Gardens do have a system of their own when gardeners are away. But when the gardeners are back, plants have to make adjustments to the tantrums of their masters... haha.

Maybe you can experiment a little more with mulches. This keep weeds at bay. They also help regulate the moisture in the soil.
You can even experiment with drip irrigation systems. These automatically water your garden whether you're there or not.

I have been thinking about mulches for my paths. As I weed, I have great amounts of time to think about this. But then I like to weed, though I don't have endless time. And mulches will cost $, effort to buy, transport, spread. I think these balance out and in the end the decision for paths is what look do I prefer. For now I like the look of weeded and raked dirt.
Now in the crop beds is another issue as you say mulches regulate moisture loss. But we have wet weather here mostly it seems. I'm not even thinking of watering systems as the rain comes so regularly and in abundance. I count my blessings.
So, my weeding is not a complaint, just a comment. Its always a pleasure to be in the garden. I will keep the mulches in mind.
Many gardens at our community gardens use mulches. There seem to be a mix and not a single most popular one: salt marsh hay, straw, newspaper, landscaping fabric, plastic, etc.
